Suspense is when there is a build up of tension. Creating a mental state of anxiety, excitement and curiosity. This makes the audience feel at the edge of their seat, when tension is arising.

Suspense is commonly used in thrillers, however this isn't necessarily horror films. Alfred Hitchcock describes the difference between suspense and mystery as; 'Mystery is an intellectual process [..] but suspense is an emotional process.' Telling the audience that there is a huge difference between the two, which is often falsely linked together. As suspense is emotionally felt by the audience when watching a film.
